Celebrating the release of album Paper Gods, Duran Duran were kicking off their official US tour at the Hollywood Bowl. Opening with the excellent new moody track “Paper God”, they delivered a hit-filled show including most of their classics and a few new cuts. The crowd was ecstatic, dancing throughout the 80’s tinted set, slow burners such as “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone” providing short and pleasant breaks. Some of the most surprising moments proved to be their cover of Grandmaster Flash’s”White Lines” as well as “Notorious” backed by Niles Rodgers (who was also opening with Chic). Other highlights included “A View to a Kill”, “Planet Earth”, “The Reflex”, “Sunrise” and crowd-pleasers “Rio” and “Girls on Films”. A few absences were also noticeable, most particularly “Wild Boys”, “Save a Prayer” and “Girl Panic” but, to be their credit, they would have needed way more than these two hours to play all their singles.
